Dauphin Island, a sand spit barrier island, protects the Alabama coast south of Mobile from storms that sweep into Mobile Bay from the Gulf of Mexico. The island is connected to the mainland by a causeway with a drawbridge that allows boats traveling on the Intra-coastal Waterway to pass. This drawbridge was destroyed by Hurricane Frederick.
