Margie's RosesGourd art craft and painting by McKenzie BirnieMcKenzie Birnie was inspired to create this gourd artwork when her mother had to give up her home and garden to enter long-term care because of illness. Using oil to paint the gourd, the artwork depicts the roses in her mother's garden against the San Gabriel Mountains of Southern California. The scene is symbolically presented looking through barbed-wire, representing the loss of freedom her mother was undergoing. McKenzie's mother passed away in the summer of 2003. After a lifetime in nursing, Margie Birnie devoted much of her retirement to volunteer nursing.
