Korowai and Taonga Iti

Paku Korowai (small cloak). The taniko pattern at the top of the
korowai depicts Te Potama (the Stairway to Heaven). The art of taniko and
korowai-making is done completely by hand, without the use of any tools or
implements. The fingers are used to twist the flax fiber into place. The items
are usually embellished with feathers and tassels.

The individual items featured in the work are as follows:

Raukura (feather) manaia: spiritual life, protection, and food.

Korari (flax) kete: clothing, work tools, lashings, medicine.

Pounamu (New Zealand greenstone jade): mana (prestige), wealth, power,
weaponry, and tools.

Wenewene (gourd): water bottle, musical instrument.

Kumara (sweet potato): staple food.

Kai moana (seafood): staple food .
