| This
painting of a Mayan warrior by
artist Juan Coronado was inspired by a Mayan ceramic figurine
featuring a warrior's face. Indicative of high rank and standing
within Mayan culture, the warrior features a broad, sloping nose, a
characteristic of Mayan culture. (In traditional Mayan culture, a
baby's nose and forehead was flattened by pressing the baby's head and
nose with a board for several days to form a continuous line from the
tip of the nose to the top of the forehead.)
Juan has created a vigorous artwork rich in color. The red skin
tones are suggestive of the ritual bloodletting so common in Mayan
civilization. Headdress was a also very big part of Mayan culture, and
Juan has been careful not to omit a spectacular example befitting of a
great warrior. The showy earrings add the finishing touch to pronounce
the warrior to be of high rank. |
