Painting after Chimu civilization gold ear ornament with warrior figure
holding victims head
This oil painting by California artist, Juan Coronado, is painted after
a Chimu gold ear ornament. The ornament featured semi-precious stones and
depicts a Chimu warrior with tongue extended and the trophy head of a
recent victim. The Chimu empire existed from 1000 - 1470 A.D. until they
were conquered by the Incas. The Chimu culture was sophisticated, with
many highly-accomplished architectural works, and artifacts, including
Pre-Colombian gold artifacts such as the earrings this painting was
inspired by.
