"Prayer Rug"

Oil Painting on Canvas

This painting by McKenzie Birnie of La Verne, California, is entitled "Prayer Rug". 

Prayer rugs are used in Islamic traditions to cover the bare ground during prayer.  They are often decorated with images and symbols to serve as devotional aids.  In this artwork, McKenzie Birnie has painted an imaginary prayer rug richly decorated with symbols of her life as well as with symbols of her prayer for peace in the Middle East.

The painting is on "gallery wrap" canvas and painted on all edges so that the artwork need not be framed.
