The Shah of Iran Portrait

"Terrorists and Freedom Fighters" - A Series of Portraits by California Artist Max Emadi

Max Emadi's Iranian background no doubt has something to do with the inclusion of the former Shah of Iran in this collection.  On January 16, 1979,  Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlevi and his wife, Empress Farah, left Tehran and flew to Aswan in Egypt after several months of increasingly violent protests against his regime.  The Shah never returned to Iran. He died in exile in Egypt in 1980. His temporal reign was followed by the spiritual reign of the Ayatollah Khomeini who returned to Iran on 1 February after 14-years exile in France. He deposed the government of Dr Bahktiar on 11 February and, after a referendum, declared an Islamic Republic on 1 April.
