Mephistopheles Painting

Mephistopheles first appeared in Christian literature in Germany during the Renaissance, as the devil in the tales of the educated gentleman known as Faust.  Faust makes a pact with Mephistopheles under the terms of which Mephistopheles agrees to share knowledge of forbidden things in exchange for Faust's soul.  At the end of the story the pair quarrel over the details of the pact and Mephistopheles kills Faust.
