The self as subject is a common theme in art and Max Emadi has
availed himself of his own image over many years. His self-portraits
seem to allow him more freedom than his other portrait subjects, and I
find him taking more liberty with himself than with others. Some of his
self-portraits seem to poke fun at himself, and others seem to be
experimentations with different techniques that he fears to risk when
the subject of the painting is not himself. I certainly find a lot of
joy in his self-portraits.
