Detail of Four Seasons - Appliqué Quilt by Ku Bailey - New Zealand Maori artist, Auckland
The Four Winds Quilt by Ku Bailey This is close-up of the detail of New Zealand Maori artist Ku Bailey's "The Four Winds" Note the Maori motif pattern overlay in the quilt. The quilt is also stitched using traditional Maori patterns. This is the red section. There are 4 sections in all representing the four winds and the four seasons. The beautiful background print used for the quilt contains many objects intrinsic to Maori culture. Among the shellfish are scallops, pipis (a New Zealand clam), and paua (New Zealand abalone). Also can be seen is the kete, the traditional kit fashioned from New Zealand flax and used for the collection of shellfish. Additionally you can spot flax leaf and feathers, two items used widely in traditional Maori art and attire. All in all, this is an incredibly beautiful quilt.
