Pania of the Reef - Appliqué Quilt

Pania of the Reef is a New Zealand Maori legend of unrequited love and reflects themes seen in the mermaid and siren legends of other cultures.

While her husband Karetaki is off hunting Kereru (wood pigeon), Pania of the Sea's sisters entice her from her position on the reef back back into the sea, from which she can never return.
