Auckland's west coast beaches have a reputation for being wild. Exposed to the winds coming off the Tasman Sea, the beaches often experience wild weather resulting in high surf. The sands are black iron sands.

Whatipu beach is located on the Waitakere Range to the west of downtown Auckland, New Zealand. The coast is lined with rugged black sand beaches encoached upon by steep hills that are covered with native New Zealand forest.
