Those of us who enjoy Independent,
Foreign, and Art House films can find it difficult to get to see our
favorite movies, often having to content ourselves with annual film
festivals or driving a long way to a theater that specializes in art
house movies. Hollywood movies are being turned out at a fast clip
and crowd out our local movie theaters. Those of us who live in large
metropolitan areas have a greater selection of theaters that show
independent and foreign movies, but even those can be limited in number
and accessibility. For those who don't live in an area that is served by
art house cinemas and film festivals, there are the cable and satellite
TV movie channels, but even then you are limited to their current fare.
That leaves local movie rental stores such as Blockbusters, which again
are dominated by Hollywood movies, and carry only a limited number of
Independent and Foreign Films, more as a token gesture than as a
commitment to the art. Recently we have been saved by
Netflix.com!
The
Netflix.com
business model allows for a large library of independent and foreign art
house film titles to be carried since their market is the entire United
States. For those who are stuck in the boonies, or wanting to catch up
on independent movies that are no longer being shown,
Netflix.com
is a dream come true.
On these pages I am cataloging a list of
recommended
art house and foreign movies, and also some general
release movies. How does a title make my list?
I don't get a chance to see every movie out there; unfortunately I have
a day job, and it's not as a movie reviewer. I happen to live in a
part of Orange County that has two movie theaters devoted to art house
film. Apart from those movies I do get to see, I keep an eye on
the reviews by the
LA Times reviewers, and I also try and listen to
Film Week on KPCC (LA Area 89.3 MHz) every Friday at 11am, and watch
the movie reviews on
KCET's Life
and Times on Thursday nights at 6:30pm. From all of these
sources I put together my list.
I don't write my own movie reviews; I just don't have
the time. I'm just making recommendations and helping you out by
putting this list together. For movie reviews, I am providing
links to the LA Times for their reviews, which in my opinion, are the
most reliable available. You will be required to sign up online
for
LA Times' Calendar Live to read the reviews.
