Landscape art featuring rural settings and the countryside have had a long tradition in the world of fine art.  With the invention of photography, the landscape as subject matter was probably followed immediately after the portrait.  The reputations of some of the most famous photographers of all time rest on their body of landscape photographs.  Perhaps the most well-known American landscape photographer is Ansell Adams, but other famous American photographers who built a reputation on landscape photography include William Henry Jackson, Albert Sands Southworth, Timothy H. O'Sullivan, and Carleton E. Watkins, who also photographed the Yosemite Valley.
