News article on my NZ Land Wars Series

New Zealand land war artHello Friends and Supporters,

There has been interest in my new series of paintings from the local media thanks to Tauranga freelance writer Pete Morris. You can read the article on Sun Live here Learn History for the Future. A similar article should appear in the next issue of The Weekend Sun, so keep a look out if you are local to the Tauranga area.

Best wishes,

Bryce

Mending Fences

Mending Fences - Painting by Bryce BrownI just finished the final stages of my painting entitled "Mending Fences.

If I decide it's finished, I'll varnish in about 7-10 days. Whatever changes I make before then, if any, will be subtle and probably won't really be noticable on screen. Something I hear a lot about my work (and the same for most art) is that the images on the internet don't do it justice. You really have to see these paintings to get the full impact... so you're more than welcome to pop by for a look first hand if you are in the area!

Merry Christmas!

New Zealand Land Wars Series "Heeni"

New Zealand Land War - Heeni te Kiri Karamu

Hi There,

I have completed the first in a series of works on stories from The New Zealand Land Wars. This piece captures the story of Heeni Te Kiri-Karamu giving Lieutenant-Colonel Booth water at Gate Pa 1864.

I have decided that I'll make each piece in this series available (beginning with this one of course) but there will be conditions as I'd like to display this body of work in its entirety in the near future. Please inquire if you are interested.

Kind regards

Bryce Brown

P.S My recent painting Mother and Child (2009) was part of an investment art auction in Tauranga, NZ last Wednesday, sadly it was one of the many works that didn't reach reserve. I have agreed to donate 30% of the selling price to Home of Hope, please contact me if this interests you and I could arrange it with the gallery.

The Shearer

Painting The Shearer by Bryce BrownHi Everyone,

I've just finished my latest work, “The Shearer”, which is definitely a comfort piece with warm hues and a real sense of calm about it.

I'm working on some commissions now, so this will be one of my last new paintings for a while. I still have four other works available from the last 12 or so months: Agape, The Letter, Gathering Wood and Lavender, and Nurture, so let me know if you’re interested in any of them.

Best wishes,

Bryce.

Serendipity

Painting Serendipty by Bryce Brown

This is a painting that I abandoned in early 2008, was part of a larger canvas and would have part of my 'Lightly on the Land' exhibition. I've had it hanging on my studio wall for the last couple of months, have had some interesting feedback with most people being quite taken with it seeing it as a finished painting. And who am I to disagree? Some of my favourite works from history are unfinished (or appear to be).

So, I have decided to make this available as it is, though it will be signed. It could be hung loose as I have it or mounted and framed.

New work | Gathering wood and Lavender

Painting of woman gathering wood and lavender flowers by Bryce Brown Hi Friends,

This piece has just been finished and I am very pleased with the outcome! This will be part of a series of works based on my model Shinae whom I have used for works in the past (Hope, Girl in a pensive mood, Girl with a basket of flowers, etc).

I have kept the background very simple to add emphasis to the figure and basket. I've sought to find the balance in softness and boldness, bringing high contrast and tonal balance in to the piece with the addition of the lavender (just added today).

Continuation of Oranga | Stage 6

I have literally moved mountains in stage six of Oranga, extending the horizon by adding more behind the existing, also extending the foreground back into the hills to give better perspective. You will notice more work in faces and hands and a change of sky colour to give better tonal balance. See http://brycebrownart.com/oranga.html#6 and click on the painting to view a larger image.

Kind regards

Continuation of Oranga | Stage 5.

Oranga Stage 5 by Bryce BrownHello, Friends.

I'm now into stage 5 of Oranga, and I'm seeking to find balance in the
painting with a change to the foreground colour. I have also nearly
completed painting the faces. I will most likely paint out all white in the
clothing in stage 6. See http://brycebrownart.com/oranga.html#5 and click
on the painting to view a larger image.

Kind regards

Stage 4 of Oranga sees some dramatic changes with addition of some
background scenery typical of the Rotorua area where this piece is set. See

the piece being painted. This will give you an idea of scale.

Continuation of Oranga | Stage 3

I have boldly taken on 'Oranga' again, inspired by tinted postcards of the early 1900's. View stage 3 here http://brycebrownart.com/oranga.html#3 click on the painting for a larger image.

I spent the day yesterday photographing my model Shinae whom you've seen in paintings such as 'Girl in a pensive mood' and 'Hope'. The images a very 'Vermeer' like and I can't wait to start working with them very soon for drawings and paintings, so standby!

I hope your New Year is off to a good start.
Kind regards
Bryce

Mother and child | December 08

Mother and Child painting by Bryce BrownI have just finished this new piece (91 x 71 cm) which is a continuation of my exploration of the mother and child theme. This painting is rendered in my more bold, painterly style of a few years ago, but still bringing in the classicism of my recent works.

New Painting and New Digs

Hope - a painting by Bryce BrownWe have exciting news! We're moving the family and my studio closer to our Performing Arts Centre. In fact we will be in the same block in an apartment upstairs, courtyard and studios downstairs which will also serve as a small gallery space for myself and possibly some guest artists.

This is in a high profile commercial business area and will be quite a radical change in lifestyle for us and for the kids (and the dog) but like everything we do, is part of a long term vision to continue making a life for ourselves in the arts, doing what we love!

I'll post images as soon as the space is finished and maybe have a bit of an informal morning tea opening. We make the move in a week, then I'll do some transforming of studio area.

I just finished a new piece entitled 'Hope' - 101 x 91 cm. As always, if you're interested in this or any of my paintings, send me an email using the link below.

Lightly on the Land Exhibition

Lightly on the Land Exhibition Bryce Brown invitation
Bryce will be exhibiting a collection of new works at the Zohar Gallery in Mt. Maunganui, New Zealand, opening on January 25th.

Bryce says of the body of work in the "Lightly on the Land" exhibition:
This is my strongest, most defined and most honest body of work yet. These paintings reflect a lot on the lives of my wife and I. Catherine has an amazing ability to be in the garden up to her knees in dirt, transforming within minutes into the most amazingly beautiful woman who could dine quite comfortably with royalty! This is about New Zealand women who carry an air of realness.

The 2007 book New Zealand’s Favourite Artists features Bryce as one of the sixty artists who are currently impacting on the New Zealand art scene. His images have also been used in the 2008 Calendar of the same name, as well as other various corporate calendars throughout NZ.

This will be Bryce’s eighth solo exhibition. He is a full time artist living in Mount Maunganui with his wife Catherine (who runs The Dance House Tauranga) and their four children.

Boys at Play at the Beach

Boys at play on the beach - painting by Bryce BrownGreetings! This piece has just been made available. It's one of my 'small works' which I'm not really painting any more of (on this scale anyway) mainly because I enjoy the larger canvas so much more.

When this piece was painted, I was aiming to capture the same feeling of scale as the larger works which, when seen as an image, works quite well I feel. Surprising that the size is only 20 x 20 cm (8 x 8"). Small enough to mail! Let me know if this is of interest and I can send more info and a larger image.

Introducing Figurative Artist Bryce Brown

Bryce Brown figurative artistBryce Brown lives and paints in Mt. Maunganui in the Tauranga area of New Zealand. His work is in private collections in New Zealand, Europe and the USA including the John Deere art collection in Moline, Illinois.

Born in Auckland in 1971, Bryce grew up in the lush Northland surrounds of Whangarei. He began to take art seriously in the mid 90s, with the outstanding beauty of the Northland area providing him with a major source of inspiration.

High passion for art became the main drive for a 12-country world tour in 1998 taking him to all the major European galleries. Again, nature and the people he observed and met in his travels provided him with ideas and artistic stimulation.

On his distinctive Euro/Polynesian figurative style, Bryce says:

I like to explore human nature and movement through my paintings. I use strong line, texture and color to accentuate human form and emotion. I have my favourite artists and although they definitely have had an influence on me, I feel I have taken just enough from history to add to the style I have now. Whilst it is hard not to be influenced by the likes of Picasso and Leonardo, an artist needs to find what it is about these greats that they love and pursue their own style with the same amount of passion as they did.

Bryce currently lives at Mt.Maunganui, New Zealand with his wife Catherine and their girls Olivia and Brianna and their sons Henri and Oscar.
