Girl at the Window

Painting Girl at Window

I have introduced some new and re-introduced some old techniques with Girl at the Window, created new colour and divided the picture frame in new ways also. I am very pleased with the results...

This piece is available for viewing at my Oak Lane studio, Tauranga, New Zealand, and will most likely be sent to a gallery once it's varnished if not sold prior.

Kind regards
Bryce Brown

P.S My recent painting Mother and Child (2009) was part of an investment art auction in Tauranga, NZ last Wednesday, sadly it was one of the many works that didn't reach reserve. I have agreed to donate 30% of the selling price to Home of Hope, please contact me if this interests you and I could arrange it with the gallery.

The Shearer

Painting The Shearer by Bryce BrownHi Everyone,

I've just finished my latest work, “The Shearer”, which is definitely a comfort piece with warm hues and a real sense of calm about it.

I'm working on some commissions now, so this will be one of my last new paintings for a while. I still have four other works available from the last 12 or so months: Agape, The Letter, Gathering Wood and Lavender, and Nurture, so let me know if you’re interested in any of them.

Best wishes,

Bryce.

Serendipity

Painting Serendipty by Bryce Brown

This is a painting that I abandoned in early 2008, was part of a larger canvas and would have part of my 'Lightly on the Land' exhibition. I've had it hanging on my studio wall for the last couple of months, have had some interesting feedback with most people being quite taken with it seeing it as a finished painting. And who am I to disagree? Some of my favourite works from history are unfinished (or appear to be).

So, I have decided to make this available as it is, though it will be signed. It could be hung loose as I have it or mounted and framed.

New work | Gathering wood and Lavender

Painting of woman gathering wood and lavender flowers by Bryce Brown Hi Friends,

This piece has just been finished and I am very pleased with the outcome! This will be part of a series of works based on my model Shinae whom I have used for works in the past (Hope, Girl in a pensive mood, Girl with a basket of flowers, etc).

I have kept the background very simple to add emphasis to the figure and basket. I've sought to find the balance in softness and boldness, bringing high contrast and tonal balance in to the piece with the addition of the lavender (just added today).

Continuation of Oranga | Stage 6

I have literally moved mountains in stage six of Oranga, extending the horizon by adding more behind the existing, also extending the foreground back into the hills to give better perspective. You will notice more work in faces and hands and a change of sky colour to give better tonal balance. See http://brycebrownart.com/oranga.html#6 and click on the painting to view a larger image.

Oranga Stage 5 by Bryce BrownHello, Friends.

I'm now into stage 5 of Oranga, and I'm seeking to find balance in the
painting with a change to the foreground colour. I have also nearly
completed painting the faces. I will most likely paint out all white in the
clothing in stage 6. See http://brycebrownart.com/oranga.html#5 and click

I spent the day yesterday photographing my model Shinae whom you've seen in paintings such as 'Girl in a pensive mood' and 'Hope'. The images a very 'Vermeer' like and I can't wait to start working with them very soon for drawings and paintings, so standby!

Bryce Brown's Christmas 2008 Wrap-Up

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2008

What a mad year it's been!

We expanded our performing arts school in January, moving into a new purpose fitted building with beautiful sprung dance floors. Enrollments went through the roof! So did teaching and administration hours for Catherine, not to mention overheads! I exhibited around the same time. All during school holidays. Hottest time of the year in NZ! We moved house in August (coldest time of the year) during the worst storm to hit NZ in decades. I also created new a new art studio and the new art space for showing works. Then had the opening in September. I pretty much hit the wall after that!

Looking back over the last twelve months, knowing we survived that, during a recession, really only empowers us more. I think 2009 may be a challenging time for some people too, but this is callus building stuff and without calluses, we stay far too soft! To a degree, you just have to ignore the gloom makers, carry on, and look out for those who need your support during tough times.

2009

The Mission.

Keeping an even keel and slowly picking up speed! That's our mission for next year.
Apparently people turn to the arts a lot more in hard times, to nature their souls. Whether you create art, or listen to/look at art, it has a tendency to take you away from the moment and to put things a little more into perspective. This is an important thing to remember as an artist, that when that painting takes the artist on a personal journey during it's creation, the emotions of that moment will be imprinted into that work of art for as long as it exists, partially imparted to each person that comes in contact with it.

Goals.

I'll begin a series of paintings in the new year, portrait style works focusing completely on the figure as the subject. Not too many distractions with extra bits and busy scenery. Some of this years works like this that stand out as 'turning points' for me were Hope, Girl in a pensive mood and Agape.

I've thoroughly enjoyed making the last small works also, and I'm looking forward to creating more of these, working on canvases around 20 x 20 cm (8 x 8"). These present some interesting challenges, making small images take on the look and feel of my larger works. But the size creates an intimacy, the viewing space tends to become more personal, drawing the viewing in. It's very much this way when I am painting them also.

Experimentation.

I'm going to start work on a series of lino (or block) prints on unprimed canvas and handmade paper. This is completely new for me and I'm really looking forward to it! The imagery will be quite rustic, old world as with a lot of my paintings, produced specifically for producing limited prints which will all be hand crafted by me.

Mother and child | December 08

Mother and Child painting by Bryce BrownI have just finished this new piece (91 x 71 cm) which is a continuation of my exploration of the mother and child theme. This painting is rendered in my more bold, painterly style of a few years ago, but still bringing in the classicism of my recent works.

New Painting and New Digs

Hope - a painting by Bryce BrownWe have exciting news! We're moving the family and my studio closer to our Performing Arts Centre. In fact we will be in the same block in an apartment upstairs, courtyard and studios downstairs which will also serve as a small gallery space for myself and possibly some guest artists.

This is in a high profile commercial business area and will be quite a radical change in lifestyle for us and for the kids (and the dog) but like everything we do, is part of a long term vision to continue making a life for ourselves in the arts, doing what we love!

I'll post images as soon as the space is finished and maybe have a bit of an informal morning tea opening. We make the move in a week, then I'll do some transforming of studio area.

I just finished a new piece entitled 'Hope' - 101 x 91 cm. As always, if you're interested in this or any of my paintings, send me an email using the link below.

Lunchtime in the Bush

Lunchtime in the Bush by Bryce Brown 2008Lunch time in the bush 71 x 91 cm

I've captured a moment in time as these six 'historical' figures stop for lunch amongst Kauri trees. Typically the area they are in would have been quite scrubby with more undergrowth, ferns, tree fall, etc. But I have chosen to keep the composition clean and open. Although the figures have quite a generic look to them they could easily be of Dalmation origin as were a lot of early bush (Kauri) working settlers in New Zealand.

This work is currently in my studio. Please enquire if you are interested in purchasing this painting.

Studio Update

Greetings,

The garage door is finally being replaced by a nice glass sliding door this Easter. Lots of light and no one can call it a garage anymore - it's a studio and nothing but a studio (just have to remember to stop the car at the door!).

I have room to display more works here now, as well as the older works which I posted last week, I also have some recent works which can be viewed on a new page here. All sizes, prices and year created are shown. Please inquire if you'd like to know more, or if you'd like to pop in to 'the studio' to view any of these, or if you'd like me to send a larger, more detailed image. Please note that prices are shown with GST which is applicable in NZ only (less 12.5% for off-shore sales).

I'm nearing the completion of my first commission for the year, so commission inquiries are welcome.

All the best
Bryce Brown.

Bryce and Catherine Brown Featured

Creative coupling: Catherine and Bryce BrownThe February edition of "Creative Beat" in the Bay of Plenty Times by Paul Charman featured Bryce Brown and his wife Catherine. Paul kindly gave us permission to reprint the article below.

Cafe culture meets pioneering spirit By Paul Charman
Their responsibilities force this couple to maximise each moment of creative time

Success in the arts demands a mountain of discipline and an ocean of energy. So say an emerging painter and a well known classical and modern dance school operator, who also happen to be husband and wife.

Catherine and Bryce Brown spending some time together between creative burstsThey’re Mount Maunganui identities Bryce and Catherine Brown, whose well-planned days begin with coffee and conversation at 6am and sometimes conclude - for Catherine anyway - well into the early hours of the next morning. This last eventuality is when a dance production is underway and Catherine is intent on having a quiet time to maintain creative flows at the end of a long and arduous day.

Catherine working in her vegetable garden with Bryce looking onWithin the mix of daily life the couple support, ransport and exhort four children - aged from toddler to teenager - maintain a large organic vegetable garden, market and maintain their own respective businesses, plan and organise upcoming artistic events and festivals and lobby for tax reform on behalf of small business people (who naturally include artists).

In conversation, far from showing signs of wear and tear, they are brimming with enthusiasm for the lifestyle they have chosen, claiming that working hard at what they love to do leads to a net energy gain, rather than a loss.

“Perhaps in some people’s minds artists are wafty or ethereal types who go with the flow and await inspiration before doing any work,’’ says Catherine.

Adds Bryce: “But the fact is you have to be disciplined if you are going to be an artist, look at Matisse, look at Picasso, or look at just about any of the successful Success in the arts demands a mountain of discipline and an ocean of energy. So say an emerging painter and a well known classical and modern dance school operator, who also happen to be husband and wife. They’re Mount Maunganui identities Bryce and Catherine Brown, whose well-planned days begin with coffee and conversation at 6am and sometimes.

Their responsibilities force this couple to maximise each moment of creative time and there are
quite a few of those.”

He quotes Leonardo da Vinci, to the effect that no work of any consequence is ever produced without constraints on the time of the artist.

Artist Bryce Brown in front of his Lightly on the Land paintingsThe couple agree responsibilities force them to maximise each moment of creative time that comes their way. When it comes to work stamina Bryce reckons that his wife’s far exceeds his own and says her ability to move between the roles of work and domestic life helped to inspire his latest collection of paintings, Lightly on the Land.

Bryce is arrested by the female alchemy that lets a woman care for children, work the land, take care of business, plan for the future and then make herself beautiful to meet the world once again. He sees it all in Catherine.

The former carpet layer is no stranger to hard graft himself, having been able to do a small house in a single day before a hand injury forced him to look at a career change a few years ago. A graphics course at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic gave him the basic skills and confidence to launch out on a long-held dream of becoming a painter.

Bryce grew up on lifestyle blocks around Northland, working for local farmers in the school holidays, and has long been influenced by painters such as Mexican Diego Rivera, famed for his portrayal of the working class. In little more than three years Bryce’s figures - painted in a vibrant modernist style - have begun to attract an international following.

One of his scenes of rural work was purchased by collectors working for the John Deere International fine art collection. Bryce paints from home and is on hand when the older children arrive home from school.

The couple share the house work but Catherine takes sole charge of the garden, at present producing abundant cabbages, courgettes, tomatoes, cauliflowers and herbs. Far from being a recreational interest it’s a strategic move aimed at mitigating the cash flow problems affecting even successful artists. The organic garden also provides the healthy diet necessary to maintain a demanding lifestyle.

When the children were younger do-ityourselfer Catherine used hot water from a chip heater in the back yard to wash some of the daily nappies required.

In professional life she operates The Dance House, which teaches classical ballet and the In Situ Dance Theatre Company, which takes youth on a performance journey, preparing them for stage and film work.

Catherine is proud of a family heritage that comprises artists and writers, dress makers and tradesmen. “Our generation is one in which cafe culture meets pioneering spirit. Whether the next generation of Kiwi children can carry that on is something time alone will tell.”

Cherish - Mother and Child Painting

Cherish - a mother and child portrait by Bryce Brown
Hello and Happy New Year!

The last painting for the Lightly on the Land exhibition is complete.

We had our 2-year old and 4-year old kids down with chicken pox, then after too much lost sleep, we ended up with terrible tummy bugs and ourselves to look after, so I never thought I'd get this last piece for the exhibition, titled "Cherish", finished!

Please let me know if you'd like to receive your personal invitation to the the preview evening by post and also let me know if you'd like extra invitations for friends, family, co-workers who might be interested.

Please email me with your mailing address. These invitations will also be sent by email in a week or so, the exhibition is only three weeks away!

Bryce Brown Raising Money for NZ Prostate Cancer Society

Mo-less Bryce BrownAs you can see by this pic, no mo at present (ok there's a slight shadow) - but I'm working on it , all in the name of raising money for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of New Zealand.

I'm not sure what shape or form THE MO will take, but I'm kind of thinking Magnum PI meets the Village people - nice!

Every year in New Zealand 2,656 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer and about 600 die of the disease, making prostate cancer the second largest cause of male cancer deaths, after lung cancer.

To sponsor my Mo please go to movember.com/nz/donate, enter my registration number which is 145682 and your credit card details. Or you can sponsor me by cheque made payable to the "Prostate Cancer Foundation of New Zealand" clearly marking the donation as being for my Registration Number: 145682. Please mail cheques to: Movember, PO Box 87 150, Meadowbank 1742, Auckland.

All donations are made directly to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of New Zealand who will use the funds to create awareness, increase support networks for those men who suffer from prostate cancer, fund research and scholarship programs,

Movember culminates at the end of the month at the Gala Partés. These glamorous and groomed events will see Tom Selleck and Borat look-a-likes battle it out for their chance to take home the prestigious Man of Movember title. If you would like to be part of this great night you'll need to purchase a Gala Parté ticket.

Thanks for your support,

Bryce

Bryce Brown's Half-Year Update 2007

Boardwalk Tango by Bryce BrownDear Art Appreciator,

Half of the year has gone, disappeared. I don't know where to, somebody took it I think!

Working as an artist means forward planning all the time, I'm already thinking of events for 2008. To begin with I'll be exhibiting somewhere in Tauranga (to be announced) around February. Then working towards a body of work that will coincide with my wife's dance company's production on the life of French Missionary Suzanne Aubert which will be around the end of 2008.

This year so far has not been overly eventful with regard to exhibitions, etc. I've been painting more of the historical scenes as you'd have seen by the updates, as well as working on a more domestic series of children and mother and child works. Raising four kids probably has something to do with this. I've never been happier with my painting technique and style and I'm constantly pushing myself to achieve more with surface, texture, composition, light and depth as well as keeping the paint alive on the canvas.

I've sold works to Belgium, USA and Canada this year and constantly have interest from people who want to deal with me directly. The reason being is that they prefer to have that personal contact with the artist and they also realise that gallery fees increase the prices of paintings somewhat.

One of my paintings, Boardwalk Tango which sold to a local collector has been chosen for the New Zealand Twelve Contemporary Artists calendar for 2008. This should be on the shelves quite soon. If you are overseas and want a copy of this, let me know and I'll find out more for you.

Harvest Men Painting Bryce Brown

Harvest Men a figurative painting by Bryce Brown
This painting called "Harvest Men" was recently completed by Bryce Brown as a commissioned piece for a European collector of Bryce's art. Bryce comments about Harvest Men: "This piece underwent a few transformations as far as subject matter went. In the end I decided to leave it open for translation as to exactly what the men were harvesting...The tall, slender baskets add a feminine element to the painting, it has great warmth and a calming stillness about it.

Four Ladies - Painting by Bryce Brown

Figurative painting Four Ladies by Bryce Brown

Figurative Painting

Four Ladies by Bryce Brown

Bryce Brown's figurative art is characterized by a somewhat naive style. His paintings are not about capturing the minute details of his subjects; rather, they are an emotional experience of human relationships and intimacy as experienced in family life or work. Background detail is often absent, or just enough to provide the context of the relationship of the figures in the painting. His figures are typically painted with faces that are flat and featureless, and the limbs of the figures are often "meaty" with "fisty" hands and "clubby" feet. The figures are rarely painted alone; communing or toiling together are common themes. The figures often appear as if they are from a by-gone era with women in dull-colored frock coats and hats, a technique that removes the distraction of the material and physical while providing emotional punch. The painitngs appeal to our emotional reactions and romantic responses to "the good old days", a time when life seems simpler to us and human relationships seemed more important than they are today. Bryce Brown's figures have not yet yielded to the spin of the technological centrifuge that pulls us apart from our kith and kin in our "modern" lives, and as I contemplate his paintings, I experience a reaction of envy for the complete innocence and purity of the human relationships of the figures.

"Four Ladies" is a fine example of several of these aspects.

Brothers Acquired for John Deere Collection

Figurative Art

Brothers by Bryce Brown

2005 was a big year for Bryce Brown. He not only had 3 exhibitions that he had to paint for, but out of the blue he was also contacted by the John Deere corporation who wished to acquire his piece "Brothers" for its art collection. Of course Bryce was delighted to close the sale. The painting depicts three rural workers in the sun-burnt fields of late summer taking in the harvest. There's no sign of a John Deere tractor in the painting; far from it, these "brothers" toil with the sweat of their brow, a wheelbarrow, and their meaty forearms and hands.

Journey - a Painting of Devonport by Bryce Brown

Figurative painting - Journey Figurative Art
Journey by Bryce Brown

Journey is set in Devonport, New Zealand, around the turn of the last century. The Hotel on the corner is the old Flagstaff Hotel which was removed in 1900 and plans were drawn up for a grand hotel to be built, called The Esplanade Hotel which is still there now. The title 'Journey' was chosen to show that the couple are on a journey together, the male, a sailor will soon depart on his journey and also that old Devonport, then very much just a little isolated naval town, was on a journey of its own.

Mother and Child Painting

This recent painting by Bryce Brown is smaller in size than he usually paints. Bryce says it's partly because he enjoys the challenge of the constraints of size, and also because it gives the viewer a sense of intimacy, drawing the viewer in closer than large works do.

Introducing Figurative Artist Bryce Brown

Bryce Brown figurative artistBryce Brown lives and paints in Mt. Maunganui in the Tauranga area of New Zealand. His work is in private collections in New Zealand, Europe and the USA including the John Deere art collection in Moline, Illinois.

Born in Auckland in 1971, Bryce grew up in the lush Northland surrounds of Whangarei. He began to take art seriously in the mid 90s, with the outstanding beauty of the Northland area providing him with a major source of inspiration.

High passion for art became the main drive for a 12-country world tour in 1998 taking him to all the major European galleries. Again, nature and the people he observed and met in his travels provided him with ideas and artistic stimulation.

On his distinctive Euro/Polynesian figurative style, Bryce says:

I like to explore human nature and movement through my paintings. I use strong line, texture and color to accentuate human form and emotion. I have my favourite artists and although they definitely have had an influence on me, I feel I have taken just enough from history to add to the style I have now. Whilst it is hard not to be influenced by the likes of Picasso and Leonardo, an artist needs to find what it is about these greats that they love and pursue their own style with the same amount of passion as they did.

Bryce currently lives at Mt.Maunganui, New Zealand with his wife Catherine and their girls Olivia and Brianna and their sons Henri and Oscar.
