If you are familiar with my work from a few years back, you will recognize the heavy impasto, use of a lot of paint and rough treatment with the brush used to create this bold, expressive piece.

During 1997-2000 I spent a lot of time travelling throughout Europe and then Turkey. Nude di Pompeii is fairly self explanatory by it's title, the frescoes of Pompeii truly blew me away with just how modern they seemed for 2000 year old art works!

You can view Nude di Pompeii and other paintings featuring the female form at www.brycebrownart.com/female-form.html or at my studio in Oak Lane Judea Tauranga. I've had it hanging on my studio wall for the last couple of months, have had some interesting feedback with most people being quite taken with it seeing it as a finished painting. And who am I to disagree? Some of my favourite works from history are unfinished (or appear to be).

So, I have decided to make this available as it is, though it will be signed. It could be hung loose as I have it or mounted and framed.

http://www.brycebrownart.com/
+647 577 1613

Working the Field

I've painted rural scenes for the last few years now, beginning with Brothers which is in the John Deere art collection in Illinois.

I grew up around farms, my parents always had small blocks, dad and I always doing various tasks together. It's a time and place where people really form a bond I think. An environment that most New Zealanders have been lucky to be connected to in some way.

My studio is in the city, we live in the apartment upstairs, have the performing arts school two buildings down. Although we fortunately have the wonderful wetlands and estuary two minute's walk from here, I feel even more compelled to paint these pieces now!

I love the way this subject was captured by Millet, Van Gogh, Bernard, Gauguin. The shape created by a person working the land in this way is very strong yet humble. Another inspiration for this work is the fields near the Papamoa hills here in the Western Bay of Plenty, which to me look quite European with the furrows and poplar trees. I've always intended to photograph this, but never take my camera with me! But I have seen it enough times to remember what I like about it.

Working the Fields is quite an accomplishment to me. It's very New Zealand, yet it could be anywhere. Something I often set out to capture in my work, and I think in this case have achieved.

Bryce Brown Art

Email Bryce Brown

New work completed - "The Letter"

I have just completed 'The Letter'. It's been 10 years since my first solo exhibition, so I thought it was time to unroll, re-stretch and get these works back on the wall. I think some of these paintings are destined to become classics!

I'm clearing these works with 40% off, once they have been re-stetched, storing will be a problem and I'd like to see them all gone. So please let me know if you are at all interested in one or more and we can talk about a price.

Visit http://www.brycebrownart.com/archive to view.

I'll be open, or not too far away Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9AM-3PM or you can call or email to make a time (evenings are fine).

Kind regards,

Bryce.

07 577 1613
0274 451192
info@brycebrownart.com

Bryce Brown's Christmas 2008 Wrap-Up

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2008

What a mad year it's been!

We expanded our performing arts school in January, moving into a new purpose fitted building with beautiful sprung dance floors. Enrollments went through the roof! So did teaching and administration hours for Catherine, not to mention overheads! I exhibited around the same time. All during school holidays. Hottest time of the year in NZ! We moved house in August (coldest time of the year) during the worst storm to hit NZ in decades. I also created new a new art studio and the new art space for showing works. Then had the opening in September. I pretty much hit the wall after that!

Looking back over the last twelve months, knowing we survived that, during a recession, really only empowers us more. I think 2009 may be a challenging time for some people too, but this is callus building stuff and without calluses, we stay far too soft! To a degree, you just have to ignore the gloom makers, carry on, and look out for those who need your support during tough times.

2009

The Mission.

Keeping an even keel and slowly picking up speed! That's our mission for next year.
Apparently people turn to the arts a lot more in hard times, to nature their souls. Whether you create art, or listen to/look at art, it has a tendency to take you away from the moment and to put things a little more into perspective. This is an important thing to remember as an artist, that when that painting takes the artist on a personal journey during it's creation, the emotions of that moment will be imprinted into that work of art for as long as it exists, partially imparted to each person that comes in contact with it.

Goals.

I'll begin a series of paintings in the new year, portrait style works focusing completely on the figure as the subject. Not too many distractions with extra bits and busy scenery. Some of this years works like this that stand out as 'turning points' for me were Hope, Girl in a pensive mood and Agape.

I've thoroughly enjoyed making the last small works also, and I'm looking forward to creating more of these, working on canvases around 20 x 20 cm (8 x 8"). These present some interesting challenges, making small images take on the look and feel of my larger works. But the size creates an intimacy, the viewing space tends to become more personal, drawing the viewing in. It's very much this way when I am painting them also.

Experimentation.

I'm going to start work on a series of lino (or block) prints on unprimed canvas and handmade paper. This is completely new for me and I'm really looking forward to it! The imagery will be quite rustic, old world as with a lot of my paintings, produced specifically for producing limited prints which will all be hand crafted by me.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

View map

Phone 07 577 1613

My studios will be open intermittently over the Christmas/New Year season.
