Calling all non-Republican voters to vote for
moderate
Republican Marilyn Brewer
OK, you’re all wild political animals, so you know that if
you live in the 48th Congressional District that next
Tuesday, 10/04/2005 is “election day”. Actually, it is the
primary election to select the replacement for Congressman
Christopher Cox who resigned to take up his post as the new
head of the SEC. The unique thing about this primary
election is that it is "open", meaning you can vote for
anyone from any party. The other unique thing about this
primary is that if any candidate gets a majority of the vote
next Tuesday, then they will be deemed elected and the
actual election day of December 6th will be cancelled.
The 48th District is at the center of Republican Orange
County, but not everyone who lives in the District is a
Republican (although registered Republicans outnumber
registered Democrats in the District by 2 to 1). As an
independent who tends towards the Democrats, I have to face
up to the fact that I live in a Republican district and that
a Republican will win this election, so I intend to vote
strategically. And I encourage other Democrats in the
District to do the same and vote for a Republican who is
close to the center and hopefully one who may even agree
with some of your strongly-held beliefs.
Can there be such a Republican in Orange County, you ask?
The ballot is a long list of names, but essentially it will
be a race between 2 candidates, with a possible "also ran".
The main contenders are Marilyn Brewer and John Campbell.
The also ran is James Gilchrist.
Marilyn
Brewer is the moderate Republican that Democrats have to
hope for in this District.
Quick takes
Marilyn Brewer: Moderate Republican who is
pro-choice and pro-stem cell research, who also makes the
usual noises about not leaving Iraq till the “job is done”,
and about cutting taxes and the deficit. (As an aside, we
all know that history shows the Democrats do that, while the
Republicans merely talk about it. Witness the out-of-control
spending under George W, the most socialistic president
since FDR, and the worst president since Wilson, who was the
first US President to launch imperial campaigns around the
world.) In an email exchange, Brewer confirmed she is
already publicly on record as saying she would not vote in
favor of a constitutional amendment banning same-sex
marriage should it come back to the floor. This demonstrates
she has the guts of Chris Cox who voted against it when it
came to the floor of the House in the later part of last
year, a move which clinched my vote for him in the November
2004 election.
John Campbell: Scary right-winger
who is currently a state senator and of course did not vote
for the recent gay marriage bill in the State Senate.
James Gilchrist: Even scarier
right-winger whose claim to fame is that he is the founder
of the “Minuteman Project”, the private militia that has
taken upon itself to patrol the Mexican border to protect us
all from more house-cleaners, gardeners, and bus-boys from
the south since he and his buddies already have enough of
them that they are paying under the table.
Endorsements say more
Brewer gets the endorsement of the outgoing moderate Chris
Cox. Also lining up behind Brewer are another couple of GOP
centrists, John McCain and former Governor and EPA
Administrator Christie Todd Whitman.
Endorsing Campbell is the “Governator” himself, an immigrant
who is now trying to shape up and flex his “illegal
immigration muscle”. (By the way, does anyone know if Arnold
originally entered the US legally? I can't recall ever
seeing anything one way or the other on this, but have
always wondered).
Gilchrist gets the support of millions of gun-carrying
red-necks and militiamen from all over the country. You
should see his placards that are up around town right now;
they feature a picture of a classic militiaman. Perhaps
Schwarzenegger should really be endorsing Gilchrist since he
spoke out in support of the Minutemen recently.
48th Congressional District Non-GOP Voters Please
Vote and Vote Strategically
If you’re an absentee voter, remember “It’s not
your tax return!” The post mark has nothing to do with it
and the ballot must be received by the Registrar of Voters
by next Tuesday (October 4th, 2005) so get it in the mail
now! And also remember you may not get a chance to vote on
December 6th; it could all be decided next Tuesday if a
candidate gets a simple majority of the vote.
If we have to live in a Republican District, at least let’s
vote for the moderate one and block the extremist
right-wingers.

in the 48th. Here’s a link to the

Brewer’s

Note: Brewer was beaten by John Campbell in the primary.
