Yumiko Kayukawa hails from Sapporo, Japan and has already made a name for herself early in her career for her candy-bright pop paintings of hip young women, animals, and traditional Japanese motifs. Using acrylic and ink, Kayukawa blends fashion illustration, sharp iconic graphics, and meticulously rendered flora and fauna to create images that evoke a dreamy and enigmatically erotic tone. The girls in Kayukawa's paintings are mysterious and elusive-- using images of both innocence and fetish, in a sexy, subtle way, always engaging the viewer with direct eye contact. The fantasy of these dream girls is mixed with the realistic depictions of nature-- insects, birds, and animals are always present, bringing a sense of the messy and real world crashing joyfully into the lives of these pristine, icy beauties. Traditional Japanese flower motifs and kanji characters used in an untraditional way round out the compositions creating a jolting, modern tone to the paintings.

"I've been creating work in the theme of communion with animals and nature for long time. That feeling of connection inside me is growing and growing through the process of painting. Because of that I feel increasingly sad about the situation between humanity and wildlife. "Extinction" is an extremely scary word. I put that fear into my consciousness to help myself face it" says Kayukawa of her latest group of paintings.

"Her nods to tradition include the integration of calligraphy, free-floating flowers, bubbles, stars, and insects in the work's composition, as well as the sometimes impossibly positioned bodies (much like Shunga, the erotic prints). Her flat, bright style and gorgeous, stylish girls are like advertisements for fun, as impossible as fashion magazine scenarios but equally as desirable." – The Seattle Stranger

Ullens Center for Contemporary Art Beijing

85 New Wave contemporary art exhibition Ullens Contemporary Beijing
I guess we're all going to start to think of Beijing and China more and more as a travel destination. I haven't been there yet myself, but those who have all come back with pretty much the same impressions: the "Wow!" it's amazing, and the "Oh my God, the pollutionNonetheless, China moves ahead and brings with it a burgeoning art scene. The latest addition is the "Ullens Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing. (Click the "EN" link for English). The art museum is housed in a Bauhaus-style former factory in what is described as the "culturally hot 798 District" in north-eastern Beijing.

The museum, founded by Belgian art collectors Guy and Myriam Ullens has 1,500 works by contemporary Chinese artists.

One of the exhibitions anchoring the opening is ’85 New Wave, "an exhibition that takes a step back from the commercial fray to examine a unique episode of art history when China began reinventing its own culture."

Open from 10am to 5pm Tuesdays to Sundays. At current exchange rates, the entry price is approximately $4.

LA Open Call Art Exhibit Barnsdall Art Park

Abstract painting of the Jetsons maid Rosie LA Area Artists' Exhibition at Bransdall Art Park

From July 20-August 26 the Barnsdall Art Park in Hollywood, CA is featuring the work of LA area artists.

Exhibiting in the show are two ArikiArt members, Juan Coronado and McKenzie Birnie.

Juan Coronado is exhibiting his abstract interpretation of the Jetson's robot maid "Rosie", which is kind of ironic in the sense that I have always thought of this piece as somehow being very "arts-and-crafts", and right next to the Barnsdall Art museum is one of architect Frank Lloyd Wright's classic arts-and-crafts homes, The Hollyhock House, built for Aline Barnsdall.

So be sure to visit both the exhibition and the Hollyhock House, which makes a great "double-billing" day out in Los Angeles.

Marilyn Monroe Life as a Legend Exhibition

Photo of Marilyn Monroe by Milton H. GreeneMarilyn Monroe: Life as a Legend

Dayton Art Institute, April 28 - June 24, 2007

Picture credits: Milton H. Greene, Marilyn Monroe, New York City, "Ballerina" sitting, 1954

The Maryily Monroe: Life as a Legend exhibit uses a wide range of artists and media to explore the public and private life of one of the world's most recognizable icons. Through the art of Andy Warhol, Allen Jones, Peter Blake, Richard Avedon, Bert Stern, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and others, this exhibition of nearly 250 objects captures Marilyn's rise to stardom. Nearly 80 artists depict the late movie star in styles ranging from fashion photography to Pop Art.

Painting After Marilyn Monroe by Max EmadiOur very own Max Emadi himself has used Marilyn Monroe for inspiration in one of his paintings in this work titled "After Marilyn Monroe". The painting depicts a woman in Islamic garb standing above a vent in front of a mosque in a reference to the famous pose effected by Marilyn Monroe in the movie "The Seven Year Itch".
"After Marilyn Monroe" is just one of several paintings by Max Emadi in a series known as "Calendar Girls" depicting Islamic women in traditional dress, but in less-than-traditonal poses.
