NEW YORK, NY November 08, 2009– The Agora Gallery (530 West 25th Street, Chelsea, New York, NY, 10001) is proud to announce the opening of Ruth Gilmore Langs: Paint, a solo exhibition. Scheduled to run from November 20, 2009 through March 19, 2010, the collection will feature a captivating selection of Ruth’s new works.

Ruth Gilmore Langs approaches painting with an inner passion that becomes evident when one allows oneself to venture beyond the surface of the canvas. Once inside the painting, you are swept away by the magic of abstract expressionism in the hands of a truly gifted painter, a lover of nature, and a soul mate of other gifted painters such as; Diebenkorn, Hofman and Joan Mitchell. The journey through her work will enable you to experience the rhythm that is so essential to fully grasp her strength and vision as well as her passion. Ruth’s intuitive sense of color and composition is her natural state of being, it is her mind set, as is her ability to capture the landscape with the freedom of a child rolling down the hillside only to change direction by dashing up again to meet a clear blue sky. Here is where you find the magic, in the realization that when you truly allow the work to capture your imagination, you allow yourself the vulnerability of a child and dare to dance among the lush colors of innocence and thus surrender to the transformative nature of ‘Paint’.

Pulsing with a vibrant energy, Agora Gallery’s The Rhythm of Color displays the expressive central role that an artist’s palette plays in the creation of a painting. Crafting their personal inspirations in a variety of styles, this exhibition features a collection of painters that are united in their understanding of the intimate relationship between color and emotion. Persistence of Form daringly explores the experience of our modern world through the eyes of the artist. Beautifully crafted imagery abounds in this choice selection of paintings as the artists inject wit, fantasy, and sensitivity into their vision of humanity. The works are raw and physical, daring to examine inwardly while holding an unadulterated mirror to the world to expose both the ills and the joys to be found. Color of Transformation is a wonderfully diverse grouping of contemporary painters working at the forefront of their medium. With an adept eye for form, the featured artists swathe their imagery in wonderfully rich colors to maximize both visual and emotional reactions. With influences ranging from music to the natural world, visitors will enjoy exploring and interpreting the messages so brilliantly expressed through the power of color. Exhibiting a wide range of contemporary art, Metamorphosis dives into a vast cauldron of fiery inspiration. We see the humanness behind the form, we find joys, fears, intrigue, and power. Altered States of Reality, Elements of Abstraction and Portals of Perception

NEW YORK, NY October 01, 2009– Chelsea’s Agora Gallery announced they will unveil a three-part exhibition that is scheduled to run from October 27, 2009 through November 17, 2009.

Altered States of Reality provides a glimpse of the world as captured through the lens of a camera, technology, and through the artists own inner vision. The gifted artist’s participating in Altered States of Reality offer us a perception of the world, as seen, through a complex, enigmatic fusion of emotions and technical mastery. The old boundaries have come tumbling down and the new reality has been altered and is forever changing. This exciting exhibition allows us to challenge our ideas, parables and perceptions that constitute our own reality. Elements of Abstraction presents audiences with a rich kaleidoscope of color, form, and texture that in conjunction breathes life into abstract artworks. Whether employing shimmering brushstrokes or bold fields of color, nonrepresentational art, with its lack of familiar forms, allows the work speak to us on an especially elemental level. Through their deeply personal forms of expression, these artists offer a stunning glimpse into contemporary abstract painting. Portals of Perception bridges the wide expanse of artistic possibilities, gathering together impressionist, realist, and abstract paintings. What we find, surprisingly, is not the differences but the similarities as these talented artists vocalize the inspirations of places, people, and feelings. While the particular visual language may differ, the spirit behind the works has many overlapping areas, because to be human is to realize ourselves within our mental and physical environs.

A Maze of Milieu is an enchanted voyage through eddying colors, majestic landscapes and smooth panoramas that dare viewers to be swept away by the brilliance of the world around us. Pulsing with vibrant energy, Color Immersion displays the expressive, central role that an artist’s palette plays in the creation of a painting. Crafting their personal inspirations in a variety of styles, this exhibition features a collection of painters that are united in their understanding of the intimate relationship between color and emotion. Idiosyncratic Expressions offers viewers a deeper story through twisted sculptures of recycled aluminum, veneers applied to natural cuts of wood that appear at first glance to be paintings, and where Americana and Japanese manga collide. Audiences will be moved by the striking and distinctive viewpoints presented in the works of art in this spectacular collective. Masters of the Imagination offers a rare chance to experience the nuances of fine art by Latin American artists, not merely with the eyes, but the heart.

NEW YORK, NY, August 4, 2009– Chelsea’s Agora Gallery will launch an art exhibition for the selected artists of the 2009 Chelsea International Fine Art Competition that is scheduled to run from August 14, 2009 through September 2, 2009.

This spectacular collective will take viewers through surreal explorations of human experience, vibrant fusions of Realism, Symbolism and Expressionism, where geometry of architecture meld with scenes of urban landscapes or subtle nuances of natural light. Into exaggerated perspectives and anachronistic juxtapositions and where objects from pop culture meet vintage keepsakes. The artists of the competition represent not just artists, but the countries and communities they hail from, each piece reflecting a little of humanity’s many-faceted soul.

Additionally, as part of Agora Gallery’s support of ART START, a non-profit organization that brings together art, artists and children in need throughout the New York Metropolitan area, ART START student, Jamai’s multi-media piece will also be on display during the exhibition.

The Chelsea International Fine Art Competition is a renowned art contest sponsored by Agora Gallery that is juried by prominent museum curators and art experts. Juror selected artists will gain exposure by exhibiting their work in the famed Chelsea Art Gallery District and their work will be promoted both online and in print. As part of our ongoing commitment to giving back the community we live and work in, Agora Gallery donates 25% of its proceeds from the sale of artwork from the art competition exhibition to the non-profit organization ART START. The 2010 Competition will open February 2010.

ArtWalk on the Bay, San Diego

In 2006, the same team that produces Mission Federal ArtWalk in Little Italy began hosting a fall event, ArtWalk on the Bay, at the request of both artists and art lovers.

Held right on the water at Embarcadero Marina Park North, this open-air gallery offers a more intimate experience for attendees, with breathtaking views of San Diego's waterfront. Showcasing the best of San Diego's original works of art for exhibition and sale, ArtWalk on the Bay gathers the finest artists, performers and entertainers in the region to create an event loved by visitors and locals alike.

This year's event will be held September 12 and 13 from 10AM-5PM Saturday and Sunday at the Embarcadero Marina Park North (behind Seaport Village). With over 100 artists and performers, ArtWalk on the Bay will host more than 30,000 visitors throughout the weekend.

The festival will feature the new "Bayside Lounge" which will be serving Bloody Marys, cold beer and wine.

And of course, KidsWalk will provide hands-on activities to keep the whole family entertained!

Lee Joseph sent some additional information about the artists exhibiting in the Lou Beach, Hudson Marquez, Jayme Odgers and Mel Weiner show at Billy Shire Fine Arts on the 11th.

Lou Beach
Beach is a prolific graphic artist who was an album cover designer in the 70s, creating LP jackets for David Sanborn, Weather Report, Yellow Magic Orchestra, Eddie Hazel, The Carpenters, Weird Al Yankovic, Neville Bros., Flying Burrito Brothers, Blink 182, currently illustrates for publications such as Wired Magazine, Rolling Stone, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Random House, McGraw-Hill, and Houghton-Mifflin. Both Matt Groning and Terry Gilliam are fans of Beach's work.

Hudson Marquez

Marquez was the driving force behind the iconic Cadillac Ranch sculpture in Amarillo, Texas. He was also instrumental in Ant Farm's public performances, museum exhibitions, inflatable structures, architectural commissions, illustration work, and videos. Mr. Marquez left Ant Farm in 1973 to co-found TVTV, the seminal "guerilla television" group that is considered to be the ground breaking pioneer of non-fiction television.

Jayme Odgers
Odgers was selected along with fourteen world class artists, including David Hockney, Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein and John Baldasari, among others, to do an official poster for the 1984 Olympic Games. His work has been exhibited in the Brooklyn Museum, The San Francisco Museum of Art, Arco Center for the Visual Arts, the Albright-Knox Museum, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and the Museo Fortuny in Venice, Italy and is in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian s Cooper-Hewitt Museum in New York City and The White House in Washington, D.C.

Mel Weiner
Weiner is a life-long fan of old-school boxing and creates portraits of his heroes using mosaic glass. Weiner feels that both boxing and mosaic are ancient crafts and the mosaic portrait has timeless iconic relevance.

Jessica Dalva "The Devouring of Dominic"
Jessica Dalva loves all things dusty and weathered – whether Victorian portraits of unhappy children or broken fence posts, abandoned and splintered. A mixture of sculpture, painting, fog, driftwood and crows, Dalva's show draws mostly from the story of a sister who loses her brother to mysterious monsters thick in the fog and how she compensates for her loss by collecting piles of things she doesn't need. "It seems to me that it is a common affliction these days to feel the need to acquire objects, or tasty treats, or gambling debts, in order to fill the spaces left behind by mysteries we cannot solve, loves lost or dreams abandoned; this show will look at how various people deal with inadequacies in their lives," states Dalva. Scott Holloway
Holloway's current work centers on the holy relics of Saints and biblical figures as highly detailed anatomical icons. Holloway fuses these images with passages from the Bible and text from medical treatise, sprinkled with a bit of Surrealism. Working with oil on panel as well as mixed media, Holloway's pieces conjure up images torn from an old anatomy book, an icon that emerged from an unknown religion and skulls that remind us of our own mortality. Born in Bellingham, Massachusetts in 1969, Holloway discovered his talent at an early age. Encouraged by his teachers to pursue an art career, he explored realism in the tradition of the Northern Renaissance. His efforts won him several awards for his work in the late 1980s. In the 1990s, Holloway spent four years studying the oil painting techniques of the Old Masters at Montserrat College of Art in Beverly, Massachusetts. Since then, Holloway has been working steadily from his studios in Worcester, and exhibiting his work at area galleries as well LA, NYC, Berlin and London. "I love to work with concepts. I have also created a Madonna and Child series. These works at first appear to the viewer as religious icons. But if you look closer, you will notice I have included an underlying 'femme fatale' theme using a lot of ironic symbolism" states Holloway. http://www.scott-holloways-artwork.blogspot.com/

Misato Otake "Murdered by Beauty"
In her work Misato Otake expresses her affinity with the cute characters of Japanese pop culture and the tattoo, street art and rock 'n ' roll music of contemporary Los Angeles. "Murdered by Beauty" tells of a tragic place where girls use their power of attraction to fulfill desire in a society where sex suppresses and ultimately destroys life and nature. Working with pen and ink, Otake loves to incorporate fine outlines in her acrylic and panel paintings. Otake has included among the 10 pieces in "Murdered by Beauty", her first sculpture, created from Super Sculpy, wires, wood, and beads. Born in Japan, Otake moved to Los Angeles to study art at the age of 15 and currently works as a graphic designer and freelance illustrator. http://www.missileotake.com/

Jasmine Worth crafts scenes from fairytales gone awry—swirling seamlessly between the sweet and surreal, inevitably dipping into the valley of the morbid. Jasmine studied formally at Watts Atelier in Encinitas, California, and earned her BFA from the Laguna College of Art and Design. While she possesses the credentials, the product of her toils clearly pours from the cobwebbed corners of her mind, not the classroom. Her paintings—a cabaret of vibrant hues—are a blend of soft textures and colorful characters, juxtaposed against gloomy themes. Created in her home of San Diego, Jasmine combines dark influences and subtle-yet-serious undertones with raw artistic talent and a rarely seen creativity. Her work exudes a strong bearing of individuality, manifested through characters that speak almost vocally and give a new element of depth to an otherwise two dimensional medium. Lou Beach
Award winning illustrator, former stunt pilot and grifter Lou Beach has created imagery for clients as diverse as Wired Magazine, Rolling Stone, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Random House, McGraw-Hill, and Houghton-Mifflin. Beach began his career in the 1970's designing eye-popping 12" by 12" album cover art and created the visuals for releases by David Sanbourne, Weather Report, Yellow Magic Orchestra, Eddie Hazel, The Carpenters, Weird Al Yankovic, Neville Bros., Flying Burrito Brothers, Blink 182 and many others. Beach remains a vital force in the arts and will be exhibiting several collages and giclee prints in his BSFA show. Born in Germany in 1947, and his name is actually the phonetic pronunciation of his real last name, Lubicz. Beach is happily married, with two children, and lives in an old California home with two dogs and two cats.

"As the internet continues to spin its world wide WEB, magazines still have staying power. Whether it's the feeling on gets from flipping through the pages or the variety of topics for people of all ages, many are attracted to the physical space of the news stand. Magazines let you browse with your human search engine. I have taken on a few magazines you might find on a trip to the news stand" states Hudson Marquez about his BSFA show. An active participant in the arts and political movements during the late sixties in New Orleans Marquez moved to San Francisco as a member of the Ant Farm Art Collective. At Ant Farm Marquez was the driving force behind the iconic Cadillac Ranch sculpture in Amarillo, Texas. He was also instrumental in Ant Farm's public performances, museum exhibitions, inflatable structures, architectural commissions, illustration work, and videos. Mr. Marquez left Ant Farm in 1973 to co-found TVTV, the seminal "guerilla television" group that is considered to be the ground breaking pioneer of non-fiction television. TVTV was the recipient of many awards including the prestigious Columbia Dupont, for excellence in television journalism. As member of TVTV, Mr. Marquez was voted into the Broadcasting Hall of fame.

Jayme Odgers
"My work is an elaborate typographic conceit. Coming from the world of graphic design, I have long had a love affair with letters, words and typography. Typography can be a first step to making abstract language visual. Ironically, language began as image. Word structure is processed in one hemisphere of the brain and imagery in the other. My work operates in the schism between these two realms" states Jayme Odgers. Working with a multitude of mediums, Odgers' pieces are created with oils, aluminum and gold leaf, gouache, graphite, bamboo, lemon, and monofilament A recipient of over 100 awards of excellence in design including Gold and Silver Medal Awards and an international silver Typomundus Award for excellence in typography, Odgers was selected along with fourteen world class artists, including David Hockney, Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein and John Baldasari, among others, to do an official poster for the 1984 Olympic Games. His work has been exhibited in the Brooklyn Museum, The San Francisco Museum of Art, Arco Center for the Visual Arts, the Albright-Knox Museum, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and the Museo Fortuny in Venice, Italy and is in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian s Cooper-Hewitt Museum in New York City and The White House in Washington, D.C. Odgers was recently commissioned by the Metropolitan Water District to design two public art fountains for their headquarters (next to Union Station, downtown Los Angeles) and is collected by the likes of film director Shawn Levy, director Allen Jaffe, The California Museum of Design, Fashon Designer Sue Wong and many others.

Mel Weiner "Mosaic Boxing Series"
The mangled, distorted and contorted qualities of the boxer have always fascinated Mel Weiner. As a child, he would watch The Friday Night Fights from Madison Square Garden in New York City. The black and white feed of these fights and the classic artisans of the "sweet science," Sugar Ray Robinson, Carmen Basilio, Rocky Marciano and Kid Gavilan, etched a permanent spot in Weiner's psyche. Using mosaic glass for his works, Weiner sees a bond between his medium and boxing in that both are ancient crafts and feels that the mosaic portrait has timeless iconic relevance. "Mosaic Boxing Series" will feature large 34" x 43" mosaics of Carmen Basilio, Sugar Ray Robinson and Cassius Clay with smaller 12.5" x 16" portraits of Roberto Duran, Jake La Motta, Mike Tyson, Manny Pacquiao and others, along with a series of ink drawings.

Musician, writer, bagboy and artist Gidget Gein is perhaps best known as the original bassist for shock-rock outfit Marilyn Manson, but his surreal-pop exploitation art proved to be the most consistent creative outlet in his life - one tragically abridged by an unintentional drug overdose on October 8, 2008. "Post Mortem" references Gein's career as a mortuary assistant, while addressing the mortality of the artist himself in keeping with his signature dark, sardonic sense of humor.

When Gein passed away late last year, the impact of his loss was felt by friends and fans all over the world. His work played heavily in the satirical traditions of fellow artists Michael Ray Charles and Andy Warhol, and functions as an interesting continuation of artists like Kara Walker and Robert Colescott. This is the most extensive gallery exhibition of his art to date and touches on important breakthroughs in his art career spanning 1993 to 2008. Included are selections from his post-Manson street art (under the name Bradley Anne), Blaxpolitation, and Anti-Muse series, as well as UnPop, portraiture, and Sex paintings.

Gidget's perspective on pop culture was never disappointing. Inundated with uncompromising wit, keen insight, and scathing gallows humor, his paintings are a relevant commentary on our idol-worshipping society. Earlier this year, Gein was memorialized during the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame's 2009 Induction Ceremony, and his influence continues to be felt in art and music circles across the globe.

Acting as guest curator for this exhibit is Bill Shafer from Hyaena Gallery (Burbank, CA), Gidget's artistic home for the past three years. "Gidget Gein, has always been at the forefront of important movements in both art and music. Edgy, fearless, and unrestrained, he pushed boundaries and wore his demons on his sleeve," says Shafer. "Gidget knew Kenneth Anger personally and referenced him in his work. He was fascinated by celebrity scandal because he had experienced it. Gein was the Brian Jones of our generation – his image, art, and songwriting shaped a new musical movement exerting influence long after he and his former band mates had parted ways."

Since all pieces on display will be available for purchase, this will be the one and only chance to see a retrospective this complete.

His works draw from the myriad of inhabitants living here regardless of species or nationality, a deep love of surf and comic culture, and macabre supernatural Mexican pulp roots. With surfers, girls, tikis, cartoon characters and hobos as his cast of characters, Thompson's work is quite a ride for the senses. A lifelong surfer who grew up in the Californian sun and Pacific waters of the cowboy coast, Thompson has lived in coastal Orange County, Tijuana adjacent San Diego and Los Angeles. Coming out of the character animation program at CalArts, Miles eventually went on to do various shorts for Spike and Mike's Sick and Twisted Festival, and since has worked on television shows for Nickelodeon, Disney, Film Roman and Warner Brothers.

drkrm.gallery is pleased to announce the exhibition of Anthony Friedkin's "Gay, A Photographic Essay 1969-1972" in commemoration of the 40th Anniversary of the Stonewall Riot and Gay Pride month. The exhibit will be on view at the drkrm.gallery from June 20 to August 2, 2009. There will be a reception honoring thephotographer on Saturday, June 20 from 7-10pm.
This retrospective exhibition of photographs about the Gay community revisits work done by celebrated Los Angeles based photographer Anthony Friedkin. This powerful and important set of vintage photographs historically documents what was then the emerging identity of the homosexual community, and the beginnings of the Gay Liberation Movement. First displayed in a Los Angeles exhibit in 1973 and later again in 1994 it's been over fifteen years since these unique and beautifully printed vintage photographs have been on view. The images in the exhibit depict a wide-ranging composite of gay life: young hustlers, drag queens, transsexuals, San Francisco entertainers; a Gay Liberation parade in Hollywood; two lesbian women very much in love; effeminate boys growing up in an environment of machismo and the religious subculture typical of East LosAngeles. "They were defining their sense of freedom and individuality," says Friedkin, who choose at the time to portray Gay people who refused to conform to society's values. "I wanted to depict their struggles, humiliations, and their triumphs." Also included are portraits of Gay activists Morris Knight and Don Kilhefner, and Gay cleric Troy Perry standing among the burned-down ruins of his downtown church after a suspected arson fire. A reviewer from San Francisco's Artweek said of Friedkin's original 1973 exhibit: "The Gay Essay is comparable in magnitude to Robert Frank's 'The Americans'...the exhibit in its entirety is amazingly strong. And for the most part the photographs are singularly beautiful in execution."

An internationally recognized fine art photographer, Mr. Friedkin's images are in the permanent collections of the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco. He is represented in numerous private collections as well. His work has been exhibited world wide and has been published in Rolling Stone, Zoom, Time, Newsweek, and many others.

Mark Bryan "Monkeys in my Head"
Mark Bryan usually begins his oil and canvas paintings with a beautiful natural landscape--although he cannot seem to leave it at that. Because of his need to make comment, he feels compelled to fill it up with depictions of absurd human activities and/or violent acts of revenge by Mother Nature. These depictions are full of symbolism, exaggeration and parody, much in the manner of political cartoons. The works in "Monkeys in my Head" bounce back and forth between serious themes and humor just for its own sake. "This time around, the serious pieces are more inward and personal in nature than my usual reflections on politics and the human condition," states Bryan. Born in Southern California during the '50s, Bryan soaked up the pop culture and angst of that era, and the paranoia and anti-war/psychedelic/spiritual movements of the '60s. In the Seventies while attending Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles (where he graduated with a Masters of Fine Arts in 1974), Bryan took up with some of the early founders of the Chicano Art movement (Los Four). They introduced him to the Mexican Muralists' work of the early 20th century and the value of their tradition of accessible work with social/political content. In more recent years, the continuing wars, terrorism and the environmental emergency have not served to change his perspective about human nature and continue to provide a never ending supply of material to work with. In spite of the disturbing nature of his topics, Bryan somehow manages to retain a sense of humor about it all. His work appears on numerous satirical and political web sites across the US and internationally. It has been featured as illustration and cover art for publications, including Juxtapoz and Adbusters magazines. Bryan has lived on the Central Coast of California for the past 33 years and tries to paint and surf as much as possible. He has a son, a granddaughter and a cat.

Daniel Elson "Filling the Spaces"
After co-starring on a reality television series about torture for The History Channel in 2008, Daniel Elson has decided to turn his attention towards exhibiting his art full time. Stylistically, he draws inspiration from the nineteenth century Aesthetic movement and 1930s through 1940s animation, with hopes of achieving something universally appealing. "My current paintings are of a dark and personal nature, while my sculptures are two and one-half dimensional cute wooden characters that usually approach a tragic end" states Elson. In addition to the paintings and sculptures, Elson will be showing four small drypoint intaglios. These are prints made from drawing into copper which are limited to about ten each as the copper wears out quickly. Elson attended the Columbus College of Art and Design to pursue his childhood dream of being an animator. Spending most of his time studying academic drawing, Elson graduated in 2001 just in time to see the closure of every major traditional animation studio. Changing direction, Elson found work with the world's largest producer of Halloween props and animatronics where he created pieces for Disney, Playboy, The Tonight Show, and Rockstar Energy Drink while also designing and fabricating countless props for theme parks, zoos, and hundreds of haunted houses, internationally. Elson has created a body of deliciously unreal paintings, sculptures and toys, refining his material into a feast of details by stringing similar symbols and subject matter through his work to build a sense of change. As a student of art and a self-professed bibliophile, Elson's work absorbs an enormous amount of influence from other artists, leading Elson to plant specific details within his creations to devise "a little art history scavenger hunt for nerds."

Krystopher Sapp "The Devil's Hand Minor"
Assemblage artist Kristopher Sapp likes to stay locked up in his studio and create highly detailed, dark and twisted worlds in the form of mixed media assemblage. For "The Devil's Hand Minor," Sapp has created a 14 piece show based on the Tarot's "Suit of Swords," focusing on the meanings and emotion that each card carries. While Sapp has incorporated dark elements in each piece, he also makes sure that every one is pleasing to the eye. Inspired by his favorite horror and sci-fi movies, war history books and intense nightmares, his works are cultivated from fear and molded into beauty. Sapp uses found objects and items purchased at Home Depot, the place he calls his "art supply store." Magda Trzaski
Magda Trzaski's casts of animal-inspired characters are enclosed under glass in forestalled activity, as strange and newfound specimens might have been in the Victorian era. Balloons float in mid-air as tiny sculptures of gangly limbed and cracked-skinned creatures balance in limbo of attempted escape and despair. There is a looming sense of life floating away, contained momentarily within the shadow boxes. The intricate figures highlight the dark undertones in Trzaski's work which is heavily influenced by Dutch Vanitas painters, whose aim was to remind us of the inevitability of death, and the transience and vanity of earthly achievements and pleasures. "There is a theme/subtext of death, despair and escape with a dose of cynicism and self-deprecation. Even though I don't take these themes lightly, I think there's definite a sense of humor in the work," states the artist. Trzaski learned to sew at her grandfather's tailor shop, on wonderful, vintage, pedal-driven sewing machines, which is probably where her love for antiques and old things-things with history-started. She attended Wexford Collegiate, an art high school in Scarborough, where she studied photography, printmaking, life drawing and sculpture, and where her art interest grew. She studied photography and film in University, where she enjoyed the ability to experiment, attempting animated shorts ala Norman McLaren and Stan Brakhage-painting and/or scratching the film surface or gluing various materials to it. In terms of photography, she always favored still life. "The whole memento mori thing started when I discovered the early work of photographers Olivia Parker and Frederick Sommer, among others. My thesis project was a photographic quilt: it dealt with the ideas behind putting together a hope chest. During my spare time I made dolls and various creatures, without seeing the potential of incorporating them into my 'serious' work" states Trzaski, who currently lives in Toronto, ON with her miniature dachshund where, besides making her characters, she dabbles in the magic of fine art jewelry making. www.magdatrzaski.com

The Long Beach Playhouse and gpromotion is proud to present Patti’s Place. This is local Long Beach lesbian writer/director Debbie Rivas’ first partnership with the Playhouse.

Patti’s Place is presented as an interactive audience experience in a one act play. Patti’s Place is a comedy about three patrons in a gay bar who find themselves involved in deception and discovery as a mother searches for the truth.

Patti’s Place is produced especially for gay pride week in Long Beach and will be presented on Friday May 15^that 10:30 PM, Saturday May 16^th at 10:30 PM and Sunday May 17^that 4:30PM in The Studio II Gallery.

Patti’s Place follows Lanford Wilson’s Fifth of July ON EACH OF THESE DATES [evening] and is free of charge. Utilizing the word “pride” patrons can obtain a $3 discount when purchasing tickets online OR AT THE BOX OFFICE PRIOR for Fifth of July PRIOR TO ATTENDING PATTI’S PLACE.

Fifth of July is a play by American playwright Lanford Wilson. Set in rural Missouri in 1977, it revolves around a gay paraplegic Vietnam veteran living in his childhood home with his boyfriend and focuses on the disillusionment with America in the wake of the Vietnam War.

Miss Mindy has an affinity for past times, and loves to explore mood, expressions and bizarre humor. Her work consists mainly of woodcut paintings, dioramas and shadow boxes, in addition to fluid ink drawings and sketches. Her method evokes a vintage and folk art feel using rough brush strokes and several mediums.

Her stories involve girls and imps, fairies and troublemakers of a most endearing yet bizarre sort. Her narratives find leads in precarious and naughty little circumstances with other players helping along the tales of mishaps and silly shenanigans.

Miss Mindy was born into a family of artists and designers who have been an inspiration. Her grandmother worked as an ink and painter at Disney in the 1930s, her other side of the family were illustrators, muralists and puppeteers, along with her mother, an accomplished mask maker and artisan. In addition, her sister, CJ Metzger has been a collaborator and muse.

In addition to her fine art, Miss Mindy is an accomplished illustrator, concept and product designer for such clients as Hard Rock Cafe Worldwide, House of Blues, Zippo, Distinction Magazine, Warner Brothers, 6 Point Harness, and The Chiodo Brothers. Miss Mindy has written and illustrated two books with Baby Tattoo Books Publishing, "Miss Mindy's Sassy Paper Doll Bonanza" and "Teenie Weenie Tales" which can be found in the "Artists Sisters: Box of Stories" book set. She is currently designing her own line of toys with 'Mindstyle,' a division of The Level 5 Group, and a collaborative set with her sister CJ Metzger. Her artwork can be found in private collections throughout the United States and abroad.

Time is a theme in Diana Jacobs' art: working with history, memory and the layering of ideas though imagery and objects. Walking into Ms. Jacobs' studio in Los Angeles, one might feel like a character trapped inside of a curio cabinet, or as if they're poking through their great, great, great grandmother's interesting-yet-slightly-creepy attic all alone. Curiosity is inspired and the snooping instinct kicks in as one is surrounded by found objects and history: science, botany and biology, 19th Century Doll parts, bones, vintage watches, antique jewels, sparkly beads, brilliant feathers, fabric, wire and wings. Each item has its own unique long story to tell. Ms. Jacobs understands that inanimate objects sometimes need a bit of help expressing themselves.
Ms. Jacobs' new book The Vincenzo Beforenowafter Theorem is an exploration of time in 25 images. The book contains haunting and thought-provoking images which took Ms. Jacobs and photographer Kerry Vitiello over a year to piece together. During that time, Ms. Jacobs traveled to France and Turkey while Vitiello journeyed to Africa. When they were finally in Los Angeles at the same time, the pair sat down with their individual works, blending and expanding them to create The Vincenzo Beforenowafter Theorem.

A few years ago Diana Jacobs started experimenting with wearable art. Using many of the same elements in her large-scale work, she created and wore her own assemblage pins, brooches and pendants. These pieces attracted customers who purchased her creations right off of her person on the mean streets of Beachwood Canyon! Soon after, Ms. Jacobs started designing earrings and necklaces…
And thus, dustmuffin was born!

DIANA JACOBS

Diana Jacobs' background in the art community is diverse – from working with commercial artists on Madison Avenue, gallery work on Melrose and freelancing as an illustrator at the Huntington Gardens to teaching at Otis-Parsons. During the last fourteen years, she has focused mainly on her studio work. Her mixed-media and print work has been internationally exhibited and shown throughout the United States. Ms. Jacobs' work also regularly appears in feature films and on television. In the past few years she completed illustrations for The Memory Bible and i Brain by Dr. Gary Small, created a work for The Book Of Lies (a large-scale collaborative piece by the late Eugenia Butler), and was an arts panelist at the Conference of World Affairs, University of Colorado at Boulder.

Diana Jacobs was born and raised on Long Island. She began studying art as a teenager and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh. After moving to Los Angeles, she received certificates in botanical and zoological illustration from the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles. Currently, Ms. Jacobs is working on her latest body of assemblages titled Time Travelers and creating designs for her new jewelry line, dustmuffin. Her book, The Vincenzo Beforenowafter Theorem, is fresh off the press.

Ms. Jacobs has a four-page resume with her education, workshops, professional associations, public art commissions, pieces in permanent art collections, awards, museum/gallery exhibitions and published works that can be sent upon request.

JAW Cooper "Daedal"
Inspired by curio cabinets and the complexity of natural systems, JAW Cooper creates illustrations using a variety of media. This series of paintings entitled "Daedal" examines the interconnectedness of species, the bizarre adaptations informed by these connections, and the parallel between evolution as a 'problem-solving' process and the creative process in art. Cooper was born in England and grew up in Nairobi, Kenya, Southern California, and various locations throughout Europe and Scandinavia.

Lauren Gardiner "Royalty Before Surgery"
Lauren Gardiner's tiny acrylic paintings and ink drawings are intricate and intimate portraits portraying each subject's every lash, wart and twangy hair. Her works observe and explore how people present themselves for posterity as well as how they react in front of a camera. Her use of ambiguous backgrounds, uncomfortable glares and awkward postures, typical of professional portrait photography, produce humorous yet cynical little vignettes that lend a brief glimpse into the human condition. "Royalty Before Surgery" is a look at royalty with facial deformities and the clothes they wear to cover their disfigurements. Gardiner was born in the U.S., and grew up in Singapore, Australia and England. After earning an Illustration degree in 1998 from the Rhode Island School of Design, Gardiner moved to Los Angeles where she observes the many aggravating facets of human life that help provide the inspiration for her little portraits' paintings.

Miss Mindy
Miss Mindy is believed to be an elf or witch by most of the neighborhood children due to her fondness of cooking spells and toy making. Her affinity for bizarre humor resonates within her books, paintings, shadow boxes, and fluid ink drawings. Miss Mindy was born into a family of artists and designers who have been an inspiration since she was wee. Her grandmother worked as an ink and painter at Disney in the 1930s, while her grandfather was an illustrator, muralist and puppeteer. She has a vinyl toy named "Dink" that has sold out and has been in a multitude of custom vinyl, group, & solo shows in the United States and abroad. Lyle Motley
The paintings of Lyle Motley live in a neighborhood somewhere between words and images, in a place where there is room to reflect, hear and see. Motley's paintings encourage the viewer to participate and challenge the observer to add their own ideas into the mix. Working predominantly in oils, with forays into drawing, mixed media and sculpture, Motley's work is mostly figurative, with occasional contextual abstractions. His non-themed show will include works that are predominantly figurative with some pieces that contain contextual abstractions. Motley has also worked with ceramics and sculpture, played and wrote music (with his band Lyle and the Sparkleface band), worked as a commercial and editorial illustrator, painted murals in Flagstaff, AZ and Salida, CO. He loves the outdoors and aimless wanderings and adventures around the West, life in the city and the middle of nowhere, and all the wackiness of being a dad and operating without enough sleep. It is not surprising that his work has become a unique blend, drawing on many sources. Most importantly, Motley is completely obsessed with smearing paint on things. When he is not smearing, he is fascinated by the light that bounces off the stuff that is all around him. Motley received a BFA from Northern Arizona University in 1993 and currently breathes among the mountains of Colorado and creates with the encouragement of his amazing wife and two boys.

Martha Rich – "Nice School"
Where did you go to nice school? This show is an exploration of niceness. What a nice girl. That's nice. If you are nice, people will like you. Do you like nice people? Is nice better than mean? Does nice finish last? Is mean winning? Jerk. Mean gets the attention. Does nice equal doormat? Wimp. Being nice all the time is annoying. Is nice contagious? You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. Who wants to catch flies? Nice. Be nice and come see the show.

This is Martha Rich's third show at La Luz de Jesus Gallery. Using personal insecurities infused with subtle humor as a base for her narrative, "Nice School" explores her experiences growing up in suburban Philadelphia where young women were expected to be nice, polite and helpful – being liked by all was the ultimate goal. At first glance the paintings appear benign, nice and comforting. Below the surface, the layers reveal a darker side to being nice, trying to answer the question whether being too nice can be a not so nice thing.

Robert Pasternak – "Doors of Perception"
Robert Pasternak (Nak) is one of Canada's most prolific and original visionary artists and creates Metaphysical Still Life (or, Moving Life), surrealistic, abstract & ethereal, diagrammatic & scientific fusion (or, perhaps fission) using acrylic paint with traditional brushes on canvas, board and wood panel. "Doors of Perception" is Pasternak's first exhibition in the United Sates. The artist creates a bridge and often a portal to different states of consciousness, connecting to some aspect of our corporeal being which he believes has shared energy systems with flowers, insects, magnetic and morphogenic fields, chakras, and is wholly connected to macro & micro systems. Some of his creations speak to the body directly, sidestepping the mind while others speak to the mind in a jumble of images, as if they are clues to a greater understanding. "My work transcends boundaries and time within my oeuvre. I work by way of juggling many stylistic worlds and ideas and do not keep to one period of work for any great length of time but am always coming back to add to that body. In this, the creation of work does not really follow linear paths. In this revisiting of themes and styles, I find interesting cross-references where one informs the other. All these sets of work are unique to themselves yet are connected and part of other groups and therefore part of a larger whole" states Pasternak. "Doors of Perception" is comprised of a sampling of some of the areas and styles of Pasternak's works that have been continually developing over his artistic practice, enabling the viewer to see a larger continuity.

Pasternak has worked as a production artist, designing for the garment industry, including logo and crest designs and color separations for screen-printing. He was the art director for Zygote magazine for two years. He worked as a digital colorist for a multimedia firm. Robert's art has graced the covers of many books, including authors Timothy Findley, Guy Vanderhaeghe , Phyllis Gotlieb and Robert Enright. In addition he is a recurring cover artist for such publications as On Spec. He continues to work as a freelance graphic designer, illustrator and fine artist, working on commissioned paintings as well as his own ideas. Pasternak also produces films that are experiments in sound & motion and are extensions of his bilateral symmetry paintings. His first work in this medium was the only Canadian short film selected to play at the Venice Film Festival (Italy) in 2003. The artist will be screening his film work at the opening reception of "Doors of Perception"

La Luz De Jesus Gallery proudly presents its 12th annual juried group exhibition, "Everything But the Kitschen Sync". This gigantic, no-theme exhibition will feature work from what we feel are some of the most relevant artists working today. We have invited commercial illustrators, tattooists, scenic painters, students, and animators to submit work of a more personal nature. The show includes artists we have previously exhibited, who consistently produce some of the most interesting paintings and sculptures in town. The show also includes a large selection of work from a brand new batch of undiscovered, underground talent. This is a wonderful forum for us and for our audience to check out the latest art trends and get the first glimpse of tomorrow's stars.
