Small Things Exhibition Waiheke Art Gallery

Held every year at Easter at the Waiheke Community Art Gallery, “Small Things” provides the opportunity for artists within the wider Auckland community to enter works for sale and offers affordable, original artworks by established and up-and-coming artists. A new format this year will provide more options for artists and buyers. Three price levels ($150, $200 and $250) and an increase in size limit means the diversity of pieces offered for sale and the scope for artists are much increased.

ArikiArt Online Galleries artist Keith Townshend will be exhibiting two oil paintings in the 2007 Small Things Exhibition.

Holly Myers writing for the L.A. Times says:

When a face becomes an icon, however, as in the case of Mao, the appearance
develops an essence of its own, and it is that essence that Yin Zhaoyang
examines.

There are six large, monochromatic oil paintings in the show, as well as
several bust-size ceramic works. Each portrays the leader at a different period
in his life, usually with some element of manipulation or distortion. Gerhard
Richter is an obvious influence on the paintings, and although Yin's Zhaoyang's
technique falls well short of Richter's profound precision, it carries a
persuasive emotional resonance.
