I was telling my friend who I use to upgrade my computer
every year or so that my computer was not really performing as well as I
thought it should or used to. I noticed it most when I was using
Photoshop, which I use all the time for ArikiArt. I have 2GB of memory
on my machine, and a good processor, so you would think that PhotoShop
should perform fine. I was starting to believe all the stories that
you have to run a Mac to use Photoshop! My computer guy asked if I was
running any anti-spyware software, and I said that I was; I have used the
free antispyware programs
AdAware and
Microsoft's beta anti-spyware for some time now. He recommended I
try Sunbelt's free trial version of its
anti-spyware software called "CounterSpy", so at the next opportunity I
went to the Sunbelt website and downloaded the free trial version. I
ran the scan and to my surprise it only found 3 items, so AdAware and
Microsoft's beta spyware can't have been doing too bad of a job, but what it
found was interesting: a harmless cookie that I identified as related to
some software I use, and two other more sinister objects that CounterSpy
ranked with its highest and next to highest criticality. One was a
Trojan that was found in the registry of my computer. I quarantined
the two files and carried on. To my surprise, Photoshop was now
performing how I remembered it used to! It was as if my computer had
finally got a big gulp of air! I immediately went and bought a license
for the CounterSpy! Apart from finding the Trojan program, one of the
great things about it is that CounterSpy will catch new spyware in real time
and alert you to it. I thoroughly recommend you
download and try Sunbelt's free trial version of its anti-spyware
"CounterSpy". Unfortunately, these days everyone needs to have all
sorts of protection for their computers, not only to keep files safe and our
computers free of viruses, but also to keep them performing well since
spyware and Trojans seriously degrade the performance of your computer.
Here's what PCWorld Magazine had to say about CounterSpy
in its anti-spyware review in April 2005
CounterSpy had the highest detection rate in our tests. The most
effective scanner--CounterSpy--was also the fastest, taking only a minute
to perform a complete scan of a system with 2.7GB of data. Sunbelt
Software's CounterSpy proved the most capable of the bunch, finding and
stopping 93 percent of all the running processes created by our 45 test
programs.
