The Sunbathers are another example of paintings by
Raymond Neher in which he
repeats the figures in the painting. A common thread that Neher
appears to convey in these paintings is of activities that are
performed by large masses of people. Here we see a man and a
woman lying on lime-green beach loungers, probably at a Southern
California beach where Neher briefly flirted with living. (It
may surprise Raymond's Bay Area friends to know that Raymond had
told me on a couple of occasions that he felt he would have
preferred to have lived in Southern California over Northern
California). The woman wears a pink towel headscarf, pink
bikini, and white flip-flops. Her bikini straps are pulled down
revealing a tan line. |
