This 1960's painting by Raymond Neher
is a portrait of his good friend Dennis Roche who moved to San Francisco
from New York at about the same time as Raymond did. For many years
Raymond, Dennis, and another friend, Stephen, roomed together as a band
of of newly-arrived East-Coasters in
1960's San Francisco. Subsequently
Dennis and Raymond also owned a house together on Guerrero Street and
that is where I first met both of them in 1987.
Dennis was someone full of vitality and opinions in
the manner of any good New Yorker worthy of his roots. Gregarious and
energetic, he had a wide array of friends and acquaintances locally and
from around the world. An inveterate frequenter of yard sales and thrift
stores, Dennis had an eye for spotting collectibles of real value in the
midst of the yard sale junk and distractions.
The portrait is of Dennis in
1960's
fashion-wear, including a "boater" or Panama hat, bellbottom
pants, and platform shoes.
