The Californians
Painting by Raymond Neher.
The
Californians is a painting that represents some of the wide diversity of people
making up California. My guess is that the blond hippie-like character
in the center at the back is in fact the artist himself as Raymond liked
to paint himself into his paintings. The blond hair, mustache, and
glasses and the likeness to him even though I didn't get to meet him for
some 20 or 30 years after this work must have been painted make me feel
certain of this. When Raymond moved west from the East Coast, he must
have landed himself smack in the middle of the age of
1960's "flower
power" at
the dawning of the age of Aquarius
in San Francisco and I can imagine finding his
hippy persona
pretty readily.
A notable feature of the painting
is the rainbow behind the group of Californians.
Presumably this is a reference to the
Rainbow Family.
