New Zealand Maori artist Ku Bailey

ArikiArt online gallery newsletter 10-04-2004

This past weekend, I had the pleasure of meeting with New Zealand Maori artist Ku Bailey from New Zealand as she passed through the Los Angeles area en route to Europe.  Ku has made several more quilts since her award-winning piece depicting the Maori creation myth New Zealand Maori creation myth artTe Putake o te Ao which depicts the Maori creation myth and which was a finalist in the International Quilt Festival held in Houston in 2000. Te Putake o Te Ao toured several US, European, and Asian cities after the quilt festival until late 2002.  It will be featured in a US quilters’ magazine in the near future. (Website of the International Quilt Show, Houston)

Ku has done several more quilts since her Maori creation myth quilt, but is yet to offer them for sale as she has plans to show them in several more quilt exhibitions.  Several of them depict other Maori legends, and one of a Maori woman and child, which is very reminiscent of a “Madonna and Child”, will be featured in Air New Zealand’s in flight magazine in the near future too. ArikiArt hopes to be able to offer some of Ku's latest quilts in the future as soon as she releases them for sale.

On top of all this success, Ku is currently working on a new series of abstract quilts that will be exhibited in New Zealand next June, 2005.
