The sun and the moon are recurring elements in art. In
this painting, Juan Coronado joined
the sun and the moon together in his own interpretation of the yin and the
yang. The ancient
Taoist
theory of Taijitu (太極圖), posits that nothing can exist without some of its
opposite element also existing within it. The easily recognized
symbol of the yin-yang represents this
duality with the yin in black and the yang in white, with each element
having a small "eye" of the other contained within it. The dark side
of the symbol is believed to represent the night and the feminine, while the
white side represents the day and the masculine.
Juan Coronado's colorful yin-yang composition of the sun
and the moon brings together the light and the dark in a harmonious
composition. The celestial bodies are depicted kissing, with the sun
painted in a warm orange and the moon in a cool white. The artwork is
bordered top and bottom in complimentary wallpaper-like patterns of blue,
orange, red, and green. The overall effect is delightfully warm and
cheerful.
