The Roaring Twenties
|
|
The decade of the 1920s appears to tower
over almost any other decade of the last 100 or so years.
Western society ended the 1800's with the first signs that the
decorative arts were about to break out from the repressiveness
of the Victorian period with the emergence of the art nouveau
movement. The West was about to enter the “Modern Age”.
Following on from the First World War, women cut their hair and
raised their hemlines, kicked up their heels and stretched their
wings in a movement that was to see them dubbed
"The Flappers"
after the illustration of one such woman as a butterfly on the
cover of a 1922 edition of Life Magazine. Despite the backlash
against modernization in the form of Prohibition, both women and
men roared into the Twenties with an energy and tumultuousness
that was paralleled by a booming stock market. Little did anyone
suspect that the decade would end with the great Wall Street
crash of October 1929 and the Great Depression of the early
1930’s.
ArikiArt artists Dene Croft and
Juan
Coronado have both painted
artworks that feature 1920’s themes.
