The Gibson Girls

Gibson GirlThe American graphic artist, Charles Dana Gibson (1867 - 1944), created one of the first pin-up girls with his series of illustrations of "The Gibson Girl".

The Gibson Girl was actually the antithesis of the flapper.  Drawn and photographed by Charles Dana Gibson, she was the average "girl next door", the new turn-of-the-century ideal of beauty with all of her hair piled up on her head in the iconic "Gibson Girl bun", high collar, long skirt and tight knees.  I know a guy that told me the story of his great grandmother.  She lived in the age of the Gibson girl, but she cut off all of her long "feminine" hair (before the flappers made it chic)...she was ostracized by her family and they even had a funeral for her (she was probably a "Tom" too).  You know, one of "those" girls.

Carin Jacobs is a fashion history expert who teaches at several Southern California universities and colleges. She also designs costumes for stage and screen and rents costumes for all occasions.
